DESCRIPTION:Alondra Nelson is deputy director for science and society in th
 e White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. She is also preside
 nt of the Social Science Research Council and the Harold F. Linder Chair a
 nd Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study. She was previously a pro
 fessor of sociology at Columbia University\, where she served as the inaug
 ural Dean of Social Science.\n\nNelson is author of several books\, includ
 ing The Social Life of DNA: Race\, Reparations\, and Reconciliation after 
 the Genome. She has contributed to national policy discussions on inequali
 ty and about the social implications of new technologies\, including artif
 icial intelligence\, big data\, and human gene editing.\n\nSponsored by th
 e Wayne Morse Center’s Science\, Policy and the Public theme of inquiry 
 and cosponsored by UO Black Studies and Minor Program. It is part of the A
 frican American Workshop and Lecture Series and the Lorwin Lectureship on
