Beall Concert Hall

Harry Baechtel, baritone

Michael Seregow, piano

Sylvestris Quartet

Gabriel Fauré began working on his epic D minor Piano Quintet, Op. 89, in 1887, but set it aside in the early 1890s to write his unique and inspired song cycles, La Bonne Chanson and Cinq Melodies de Venise, both of which feature poetry by the symbolist poet Paul Verlaine.  University of Oregon alumni, baritone Harry Baechtel, and pianist Michael Seregow join forces with Sylvestris Quartet, the San Francisco Bay Area’s new historically informed String Quartet, to present these remarkable and sublime works on gut strings with a quartet of period French instruments.

Cinq mélodies “de Venise,” Op. 58 (1891)

Nocturne #6, Db-Major (1894)

La Bonne chanson (1894)

Piano Quintet no. 1, Op. 89 (begun in 1887, published in 1907)
