Career Instructor of Spanish and Supervisor of First-year Spanish Paula Ellister has been been working to provide the opportunity for our students to explore the Spanish-speaking community on campus and in the Eugene/Springfield area. One such opportunity is a project in which students research a location where Spanish is spoken or where the Spanish-speaking community comes together, visit the location, and report back to the class in the form of an infographic. The goal is to create awareness, spark interest, and encourage future engagement for our students.
Another ongoing project is in collaboration with the JSMA. Last academic year and this upcoming spring term Ellister and her instructors are collaborating with JSMA and third-year students (in Span 303 and Span 308) to have Span 100 students visit an exhibit in the museum with the third-year students as our guides. In order to make the most of the experience, the first-year Spanish instructional team prepares them for the content with vocabulary they will need to describe the art and the experience. After their visit to JSMA, students then investigate other artists from the Spanish-speaking world (including the US) and create presentations about those artists to share with the class.
