Recital: Kyle Hutchins, Saxophone

Kyle Hutchins is a performing artist, improviser, chamber musician, and educator. His work focuses on the creation and promotion of experimental art music, both as a soloist and in close collaboration with composers, performers, and interdisciplinary artists. He often makes sound wielding a saxophone, his voice, and technology. Kyle's playing has been described as "formidable" (The Saxophone Symposium), "masterful" (Signals for Images), "an impressive achievement" (VitaMN),  "so much chaos" (I Care If You Listen), and "a full on noise-jazz symphony" (Raised by Gypsies). He has performed at Carnegie Hall (NYC), Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (Germany), Shanghai Conservatory of Music  上海音乐学院 (China), Muzička akademija u Zagrebu (Croatia), Janáčkova konzervatoř a Gymnázium v Ostravě (Czech Republic), St. Leonard's Chapel (Scotland), New York City Electronic Music Festival, National Sawdust (NYC), Center for New Music (San Francisco), NUNC! (Chicago), SPLICE Festival (Bowling Green, OH), Punk Ass Classical (Minneapolis), Twin Cities New Music Festival (St. Paul), USF New Music Festival (Tampa), The Mammal Gallery (Atlanta), New Music Gathering (Boston), Holocene (Portland), CubeFest (Blacksburg, VA), Electroacoustic Barndance, World Saxophone Congress, NASA, SEAMUS, NIME, ICMC, among others. He has commissioned and premiered over 130 new works by composers such as Katherine Bergman, Kirsten Broberg, Joshua Clausen, Joey Crane, Sam Krahn, Emily Lau, Lei Liang, Eric Lyon, Scott L. Miller, Ann Millikan, Barry Moon, Ted Moore, Joshua Musikantow, Daniel Nass, Mark Oliveiro, Tiffany M. Skidmore, Dan Tramte, Schuyler Tsuda, Adam Zahller, and others. 

Kyle is a member of 113 (One Thirteen), a collection of composers and performers of experimental new music who curate concerts, educational programs, festivals, seminars, and masterclasses throughout the US and Europe. He is one half of Binary Canary, a woodwind-laptop improvisation duo alongside electronicist Ted Moore. As a chamber musician, Kyle performs with AVIDduo, The Broken Consort, Hutchins/Qiang Duo, The Poem Is Done, and Strains New Music Ensemble. As a performance artist, Kyle has been featured at Gamut Gallery, Nash Art Gallery, Northern Spark (Minneapolis), and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (Spokane), among others. 

As an educator, Kyle has held residencies and taught masterclasses at universities across the country, including summer programs such as the Orfeo Music Festival (Italy), E. Rousseau Saxophone Workshop at Shell Lake (Wisconsin) and The Walden School (New Hampshire). He has given clinics and presentations at The Midwest Clinic, NACWPI,  ATMI, CMS, and at Music Educator Conferences around the country. In 2016, Kyle joined the faculty of Virginia Tech where he teaches saxophone.

Kyle has a D.M.A. and M.M. in Saxophone Performance from the University of Minnesota where he studied with renowned saxophonist Eugene Rousseau. He has B.M. and B.M.E. degrees from the University of North Texas where he studied with Eric Nestler. Kyle has additional studies in contemporary music with James Dillon and Marcus Weiss.
