Dana Monteiro will be visiting the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance as part of the Robert M. Trotter Visiting Professor Series. 

The Samba Schools and Carnival of Rio de Janeiro.

Dr. Monteiro will discuss the communities and parade organizations of the Rio de Janeiro carnival. This lecture will include an overview of the samba-enredo style of samba and will focus on the inner workings of the bateria, the percussion section of the samba school. Participants will gain an understanding of the music’s structure, rhythmic vocabulary, and the ways samba school activities foster a sense of community among members.
