This public lecture is presented by SOMD graduate student Emily Loeffler towards a PhD in Musicology. It focuses on the Swiss cow-herding song called the "ranz des vaches," to examine various ways Swiss people were sonically connected to the Alps in the period 1700–1900. A wide variety of primary source documents, including aristocratic song collections, music boxes, early folkloric projects, festival paraphernalia, travelogues, musical postcards, and natural science journals, combine to tell us a story about man's complex relationship with the natural world at the dawn of the Anthropocene.
