McKenzie Hall was designed in 1968 by Unthank, the first African American graduate from the UO School of Architecture. He was a prolific and successful architect for over 40 years, and a prominent figure in Eugene’s architectural scene. McKenzie Hall, originally home of the law school, is a notable example of the Brutalist style within the context of the Pacific Northwest, Eugene, and the University of Oregon campus.

The preservation plan project is supported by a $150,000 Conserving Black Modernism grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. UO is one of 24 sites to receive a total of $3 million in grant funding to advance ongoing preservation activities for historic sites, buildings, and landscapes that represent Black cultural heritage.
