Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage was written between 1837 and 1877 for solo piano. Its three books are considered a summation of his compositional style. Books I and II, subtitled Suisse and Italie, contain pieces inspired by paintings, sculptures, and literature Liszt encountered during travels in the 1830s. Book III does not have a destination for a subtitle, and its pieces seem to depict a spiritual journey rather than a physical one.
