Jamie Richards: The Third Way: Translation in and out of Comparative Literature

Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00pm

Gerlinger Hall, Gerlinger Lounge
1468 University Street, Eugene, OR 97403

Translation studies has blossomed in recent decades, settling into various institutional homes and expanding from
its cultural turn in all kinds of interdisciplinary directions; meanwhile, we are in a veritable golden age of literary translation in the Anglophone world, with increased support for international literature, diversification of the profession, and myriad opportunities for publication. But who is driving? The translator, or the translation
scholar? Can one still be both? Jamie Richards (COLT PhD, 2014) reflects on the state of literary translation today as a practice within and without the academy discussing her own experience and career trajectory.
