DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Hamed Aleaziz (UO/SOJC '09) will discuss what it
  was like graduating in the middle of a recession and his path through jou
 rnalism at publications such as Mother Jones\, the San Francisco Chronicle
 \, BuzzFeed News and the Los Angeles Times while also highlighting several
  stories he broke on immigration and the Department of Homeland Security a
 long the way. \n\n--\n\nHamed Aleaziz joined the Los Angeles Times in May 
 2022 to cover immigration policy. \n\nAleaziz came to The Times from BuzzF
 eed News\, where he covered immigration and consistently broke news on Tru
 mp and Biden policies\, revealed several internal reports detailing condit
 ions within DHS detention and documented how ICE deported a group of child
 ren to Guatemala after a federal court judge said it couldn’t. \n\nBefor
 e that\, he covered immigration\, race and civil rights at the San Francis
 co Chronicle\, was a criminal justice reporter at the Daily Journal and di
 d a year-long fellowship at Mother Jones. After graduating from the SOJC/U
 O with a degree in journalism in 2009\, he also spent 18 months as a Resea
 rch Assistant for Reza Aslan\, the well-known Iranian-American scholar.\n\
 nA Livingston Award finalist in 2021\, he lives in Healdsburg (CA) with hi
 s wife and two young boys and is a passionate San Francisco 49ers and Gian
