In this talk, Hamed Aleaziz (UO/SOJC '09) will discuss what it was like graduating in the middle of a recession and his path through journalism at publications such as Mother Jones, the San Francisco Chronicle, BuzzFeed News and the Los Angeles Times while also highlighting several stories he broke on immigration and the Department of Homeland Security along the way.

Hamed Aleaziz joined the Los Angeles Times in May 2022 to cover immigration policy.

Aleaziz came to The Times from BuzzFeed News, where he covered immigration and consistently broke news on Trump and Biden policies, revealed several internal reports detailing conditions within DHS detention and documented how ICE deported a group of children to Guatemala after a federal court judge said it couldn’t.

Before that, he covered immigration, race and civil rights at the San Francisco Chronicle, was a criminal justice reporter at the Daily Journal and did a year-long fellowship at Mother Jones. After graduating from the SOJC/UO with a degree in journalism in 2009, he also spent 18 months as a Research Assistant for Reza Aslan, the well-known Iranian-American scholar.

A Livingston Award finalist in 2021, he lives in Healdsburg (CA) with his wife and two young boys and is a passionate San Francisco 49ers and Giants fan.
