Global Perspectives on Sports and Society

Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 4:00pm to 5:45pm

During International Education Week, join this exciting hybrid event exploring international perspectives on sport and society. This discussion features international faculty of sports business and alumni in athletics and sports-related professions around the world.

It takes place in SBUS 250N Sports Business and Society, an introductory Sports Business class taught in Mandarin with English texts and multilingual assignments. This course is designed to ease international students' transition to an English immersion environment, give them a bilingual introduction to core concepts in the area of study, and ensure their success in the English-only courses to come.

The course is taught by Dupree Zong, MBA '15, current Senior Footwear Demand Planner at Nike, himself from China and a native speaker of Mandarin.

Faculty moderators and alumni panelists will discuss:

  • Their interest in and interaction with sport and how it has impacted their studies and careers
  • Their experiences with differences and similarities between U.S. and international sports (cultural and structural)
  • Their experience with and opinions about issues surrounding diversity in sport (gender, race, and ethnicity)
  • Their career trajectories and advice for current students interested in sports-related careers

The session will be moderated by UO sports business instructors Yoav Dubinsky and Dupree Zong. They will be joined by the following panelists:

  • Christopher Scheller '97 – Regional Head of Footwear Development - Asia, New Balance
  • Jeff Sharma '09 – Senior Global Commercial Director - EA SPORTS FIFA, Electronic Arts (EA)
  • Jessica Hull '19 – Three-time All-American, two-time NCAA Cross Country Champion
  • Alejandra Gutierrez Arellano '15 – Publicist and Communications Manager, The LIFT Mexico
