Most of us spend more than 90% of our lives in static indoor environments. Two of the consequences of this prolonged lack of contact with nature and change are elevated stress and reduced alertness.  The 'Outside In' installation is extracted from the newly released video-animated iBook, Vital, by University of Oregon professor Kevin Nute, which shows how both of these problems can be effectively addressed by using the simple techniques of projection and enclosure to bring the natural movements of the weather indoors.

The book demonstrates how buildings can be designed to reconcile their traditional role of protecting us from the weather and reconnecting us with nature, and also how the movements of the elements can increase our awareness of passive environmental control and rainwater harvesting in buildings.

Vital can be downloaded directly from the iBookstore or via the website vitalarchitecture.org

Kevin Nute can be contacted at knute@uoregon.edu.
