Rather than crediting the unique character of American industrial design to designers’ exceptional ingenuity or to consumers’ idiosyncratic tastes, Carma Gorman, author of the forthcoming book Exceptional: How US Law Shaped American Industrial Design, traces the distinctive traits of American industrial design to the unusual constraints and affordances of US intellectual property, liability, environmental, energy, trade, and tax laws.
