Demystifying Media Series: Hackers, Data and Code in the Age of Trump

Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 10:30am to 11:30am

Erb Memorial Union (EMU), Diamond Lake Room
1395 University Street, Eugene, OR 97403

What does the Trump election mean for data journalism? Professor Nikki Usher will discuss her new book on interactive journalism and look ahead to what’s next for interactive journalism across the world.

These journalists have been viewed as the savior of the news industry, bringing with them an aura of quantification and digital storytelling capacities into the newsroom. But data isn't as objective as we might like to think, and the presentation of data and information is critical given its significant influence in shaping public opinion. It is especially damaging when done poorly.

Thinking about the promises and perils of interactive journalism has never been more important, and this talk aspires to be a starting point for this conversation at U of O.
