Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) faculty grantee, Maria Fernanda Escallón, will speak on her book project, Becoming Heritage: Recognition, Exclusion, and the Politics of Black Cultural Heritage in Colombia.

By examining the effects of the declaration of San Basilio de Palenque's Afro-descendant culture as "Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO, Maria Fernanda Escallón's book project examines how new language and technical vocabularies of cultural heritage recognition entrench existing patterns of discrimination and further marginalize vulnerable Black community members in Colombia.

This in-person event will take place in 180 PLC. Masks are required and attendance will be capped at 100.
