DESCRIPTION:Although you may not spend a lot of time thinking about volcano
 es\, these geologic features impact our daily lives in many ways - especia
 lly in Oregon and the rest of the Pacific Northwest. The spectacular volca
 noes of the Cascades provide exceptional wildlife habitat\, recreational o
 pportunities\, and natural resources. The high elevation of the Cascades p
 lays a major role in determining climate differences between temperate rai
 nforests on the west side of the range and arid high deserts on the east s
 ide.\n\nVolcanoes can also be dangerous. Lava flows can bury roads\, house
 s\, and everything else in their path. Volcanic ash can cause severe probl
 ems for transportation\, agriculture\, drinking water supplies\, and air q
 uality. Volcanic gasses can be deadly to breathe\, and they can alter glob
 al atmospheric conditions and climate. For these reasons\, it is important
  to study volcanoes and to be prepared for future volcanic activity.\n\nDr
 . Daniele McKay offers a two-day course focusing on how and why volcanoes 
 erupt\, and the geologic history of the Central Oregon Cascades. We will m
 eet on Friday\, October 12\, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the University of O
 regon Bend Center for an introduction to the geology of volcanoes. On Satu
 rday\, October 13\, we will spend the day in the field looking at recent v
 olcanic deposits and the impacts that volcanoes have had in shaping the la
 ndscapes and culture of Central Oregon. Course objectives include:\n\nBeco
 me familiar with volcanic products and processes.Learn about the active vo
 lcanoes of the Cascade Mountains.Understand the hazards posed by active vo
 lcanoes.Gain an appreciation for the impact of volcanic activity on human 
 history.Understand the risks and benefits of living in close proximity to 
 potentially active volcanoes.This course is designed for people with littl
 e or no background in geology. We will cover the basics of how and why vol
 canoes erupt\, and the deposits they produce. Participants with previous k
 nowledge of geology and geologic process will broaden their understanding 
 of the volcanic history of Central Oregon\, and of volcanoes in general.\n
 \nRegistration is required\; payment will be due at the time of registrati
 on.
