Community Lecture Title - Music Therapy: The art and science of improving the human condition

Description: Music is a part of everyday life throughout our lifespan changing how we feel, interact and respond to the world around us. Music can be the primary focus of our attention, like when we play an instrument or listen to an orchestra, or it can be in the background of our environment while we shop for groceries or enjoy a meal at a restaurant. In whatever way we experience music, it changes us and enriches our lives. Music may even be essential to our health and well-being. As such, music therapy is a profession that uses music within a therapeutic relationship to foster purposeful change in health-related outcomes for people of all ages and abilities. In this community lecture, we will explore how music creates change in people, and why music matters for ourselves and in therapeutic relationships. We will also examine several music therapy research studies that illustrate how we are deepening the relationship between music, our brains, quality of life and health across the lifespan. Join us to learn how music therapy builds capacity for making a bigger impact on how music helps, heals, and transforms lives.
