At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. After it closes at the JSMA, the exhibition will travel to the USC Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California in Pasadena.

The Rubin recently transitioned to being a “museum without walls,” sharing its collection and expertise through traveling exhibitions, object loans, grant opportunities, and partnerships with the goal of encouraging understanding and appreciation of Himalayan art worldwide.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Singing for Justice (2024) is the story of Petric (1915-2013), a political radical, musician, mother, worker and grandmother who united folk music and activism through almost a century of American social movements. Over her long and purposeful life, Petric inspired all to take responsibility for social change, women and elders to defy stereotypes, and everyone she met to sing along.

Freedman is the Edgar E. Robinson Professor in US History (Emerit) at Stanford University and co-founder of Stanford’s Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, where she is currently a Stanford Faculty Fellow. Freedman’s ten books on the histories of women, feminism, and sexuality include two prize-winning studies of prison reform–Their Sisters' Keepers and Maternal Justice; the surveys No Turning Back: The History of Feminism and the Future of Women and (with John D'Emilio) Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America; and the multi-award winning Redefining Rape: Sexual Violence in the Era of Suffrage and Segregation. She is currently writing about narratives of sexual assault and harassment in 20th century women’s oral histories.

Persis Karim is the former director of the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies at San Francisco State University where she also taught in the Department of Humanities and Comparative and World Literature. She is the editor of three anthologies of Iranian diaspora literature, and has published numerous articles about Iranian diaspora literature and culture for academic journals, as well as poetry and essays in non-academic publications. The Dawn is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life is her first film and reflects her interest in documenting and sharing the larger history and personal stories of those who are part of the global Iranian diaspora.

This talk explores how Pasifika students, educators, and community leaders are building feminist futures through grassroots action, mutual aid, and healing-centered justice work. Drawing from transinstitutional and institutionless efforts, including the ADVANCE Journal: Individual and Institutional Transformation for Social Justice, QTPI Village, and Guma' Gela', the presentation highlights student- and community-led pathways to decolonization, reproductive justice, climate resilience, and collective care. Centering ancestral wisdom and intergenerational leadership, this presentation offers a vision of Pasifika futures rooted in liberation, relationality, and community healing.

Sarina Saturn, PhD (she/they), is a CHamoru and Indian scholar-activist, educator, psychologist, neuroscientist, former tenured professor, community scientist, and public scholar whose work bridges higher education, health equity, and social justice. She has taught across psychology, neuroscience, and health sciences while advancing inclusive learning environments grounded in trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and liberatory practice. Her scholarship and community work center decolonization, intersectional racial justice, collective healing, intergenerational leadership, and reverse and reciprocal mentorship, with longstanding engagement in BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and feminist communities

How can historical research contribute to understanding silence and speech about sexual violence? Based on her analysis of a large text database of oral history collections, Professor Freedman will explore how women from diverse backgrounds remembered and reacted to unwanted sexual advances during the twentieth century. She applies both quantitative digital humanities tools and qualitative close readings of relevant women’s narratives to consider two topics: stories of sexual assault handed down in African American families, and varied responses to educational and workplace harassment.

The Annual Pierson Lecture is a Department of History tradition that spans back to 1993, when it was founded to honor Stan and Joan Pierson. The Piersons were both exemplary citizens of the community, dedicated to history and education as proven by their distinguished records of intellectual accomplishment and community involvement. This lecture series brings distinguished scholars to the University of Oregon, so that they may share their work in alignment with the Piersons’ interests in cultural, intellectual, and political life.

Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Mitra’s scholarship brings together feminist political thought, sexuality studies, and global intellectual history. Her new book, The Future That Was: A History of Third World Feminism Against Authoritarianism (Princeton University Press, 2026) describes how Third World women seized the means of knowledge production to fight against rising authoritarianism and imagine a future freer than our present. Her first book, Indian Sex Life: Sexuality and the Colonian Origins of Modern Social Thought (Prinston University Press, 2020), describes how British authorities and Indian intellectuals developed ideas about deviant female sexuality to control and organize modern society in India.

The Center for the Study of Women in Society Acker-Morgen Memorial Lectureship honors two powerful feminist voices, CSWS founding director Joan Acker and longtime Center director Sandra Morgen, both of whom passed away in 2016. This annual lecture series commemorates their legacies by bringing to the UO campus renowned feminist scholars who work on issues of economic justice and gender equity – issues that were very near and dear to both Joan and Sandi.

At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. Perinatal depression occurring during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth is a significant yet often underrecognized public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Withers will discuss the far-reaching impacts of PD on both mothers and infants, including challenges in maternal well-being, early bonding, and child development.

The talk will also highlight the lack of standardized screening and the broader structural barriers that limit access to maternal health care. By addressing these geographic and systemic inequities, this presentation underscores the urgent need for improved screening practices and expanded care to better support mothers and families worldwide.

Withers is a professor of clinical population and public health sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California.

“This presentation introduces my studio practice, which is situated at the intersection of weaving and animation. I create woven textiles on a jacquard loom and translate these fabrics into time-based works, approaching the loom as a camera and editing tool. By working with sequential woven images and material processes, my work explores how textiles can generate motion and shape the moving image. I will discuss recent projects that move between handwoven cloth and animation, as well as the technical and conceptual questions that arise when textiles are used as a time-based medium. Kate Nartker works between animation and weaving to dismantle images, narratives, and material structures. She received an MFA from the California College of the Arts and is an Assistant Professor of Textile Design at the Wilson College of Textiles at NC State University. Her work has been included in exhibitions and screenings throughout the United States and internationally, including The Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, The Contemporary Austin, and the Hordaland Art Center in Bergen, Norway.

Pelizzon’s A Gaze Hound That Hunteth by the Eye (Pitt Poetry Series), longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award, is a TLS Book of the Year and one of LitHub “Favorite Poetry Collections” of 2024. Her first book, Nostos, won the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber First Book Award; her second, Whose Flesh Is Flame, Whose Bone Is Time, was a finalist for the Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize at The Waywiser Press. She is also coauthor of Tabloid, Inc., a critical study of film, photography, and crime narratives. Her recognitions include a Hawthornden Fellowship, the Amy Lowell Traveling Scholarship, a Lannan Foundation Writing Residency Fellowship, and a “Discovery”/The Nation Award. At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. After it closes at the JSMA, the exhibition will travel to the USC Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California in Pasadena.

The Rubin recently transitioned to being a “museum without walls,” sharing its collection and expertise through traveling exhibitions, object loans, grant opportunities, and partnerships with the goal of encouraging understanding and appreciation of Himalayan art worldwide.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Transnational Trashscapes: Enframing Global Waste Management in Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s Documentary Matter Out of Place (2022).

Join us for the spring installment of the Ring Lecture where Professor Holt will discuss the images of waste disposal sites from across the globe in Austrian filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s documentary Matter Out of Place. The film confronts the viewer with the unfamiliar scales and impacts of contemporary waste through its employment of three experimental techniques: 1) a discontinuous organization that disrupts traditional understandings of ‘waste flow’; 2) a single-point perspective that decenters the human gaze; and 3) a jarring editing practice that reveals the entanglement of manmade waste and the ‘natural’ world.

This presentation is part of Professor Holt’s book project that analyzes contemporary German-language texts and films laboring to depict newer forms of waste (e.g., micro- and nanoplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and e-waste).

Cornish uses the Chernobyl disaster as a starting point to set sound and music studies into dialogue with the deep history of radiation and nuclear arms testing in the twentieth century. Weaving together archival documents, oral history, and musical examples, Cornish shows how scientists, bureaucrats, artists, and ordinary citizens alike turned to sound to measure and better understand the atom’s potential in the Soviet Union and United States. She positions radiation as a “hyperobject” (Morton 2013): an object that is so vast and immeasurable that it defies interpretation.

As something simultaneously both incomprehensible in scope and invisible to the human eye, radiation intersects with audile techniques in ways that help to illuminate changing epistemologies and political ecologies during the Cold War. Listening to the atom, Cornish argues, challenged historical actors to recalibrate their understandings of science, empiricism, and geopolitics.

At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. After it closes at the JSMA, the exhibition will travel to the USC Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California in Pasadena.

The Rubin recently transitioned to being a “museum without walls,” sharing its collection and expertise through traveling exhibitions, object loans, grant opportunities, and partnerships with the goal of encouraging understanding and appreciation of Himalayan art worldwide.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Work parties are when we come together to collectively care for the space. We have raised beds and other planting areas that are managed by the overall community to produce food (mainly vegetables) for the student food pantry, the SSC Produce Drop, and of course (and often primarily) those who come each week to volunteer. So, a typical work party may include harvesting food, weeding beds, sowing seeds/transplanting starts, chipping a wood path, etc. There is no signup ahead of time, the only prep beforehand is dressing for the weather in clothes you don't mind some dirt/sweat on.

McKenzie Hall was designed in 1968 by Unthank, the first African American graduate from the UO School of Architecture. He was a prolific and successful architect for over 40 years, and a prominent figure in Eugene’s architectural scene. McKenzie Hall, originally home of the law school, is a notable example of the Brutalist style within the context of the Pacific Northwest, Eugene, and the University of Oregon campus.

How do our bodies move, heal and make sense of the world? This event explores biology through two very different lenses. One talk reveals how fluid and exercise shape the Achilles tendon, using imaging to improve rehab. The other explores vision through the eyes and brain of an octopus, showing how studying unusual bodies can help us better understand our own.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Jagodinsky is Associate Professor of History at University of Nebraska Lincoln, where she is the founding director of the Digital Legal Research Lab and leads a Mellon-funded higher ed initiative in US Law and Race. She recently launched an award-winning database entitled Petitioning for Freedom: Habeas Corpus in the American West, 1812-1924 with support from the National Science Foundation and will complete her book based on the dataset with a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the coming academic year.

Jagodinsky will share findings from the Petitioning for Freedom dataset, particularly those coming out of Oregon archives, in addition to trends across the American West. These cases represent histories of petitioners who challenged enslavement, colonialism, coverture, deportation, incarceration, and institutionalization, demonstrating a remarkable range of legal mobilization among the most vulnerable.

Step in spring at Fashion In Bloom, a free student fashion show celebrating creativity, sustainability, and original and thrifted style. Join Align Magazine, the UO Fashion Club, and the School of Journalism and Communication for an evening of original looks designed by student designers and styled in collaboration with some of Eugene's most beloved local businesses.

The first act will showcase an array of original designs created by students. In the second half, models will take the runway in curated looks featuring vintage and thrifted pieces styled by The Racks, Fashion Club, Align, and So Much Love.

Refreshments will be served during intermission. Resellers including The Racks and So Much Love will also be selling clothing and accessories before and after the show and during intermission.

From tiny materials to vast galaxies, this event explores our place in the universe. One talk looks at replacing “forever chemicals” found in everyday products with safer, earth‑friendly materials. The other zooms out to the cosmos, using images from powerful telescopes to explain the scale of the universe, our solar neighborhood, and the search for planets beyond our own.

UO chemistry graduate Alex Rosen and Prof. Scott Fisher will be sharing their insights into these topics.

At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. Artist Jeremy Okai Davis illuminates their lives and asks us to consider how we remember our collective history. Davis's ten portraits of early Black residents of Oregon tell stories often left out of history, from a Civil War veteran to the editor of Oregon's largest Black newspaper.

Afro-Canadian poet and scholar M. NourbeSe Philip has written that “Law and poetry both share an inexorable concern with language—the ‘right’ use of the ‘right’ words, phrases, or even marks of punctuation; precision of expression is the goal shared by both.” In fact, this shared concern is often incantatory: it has the power to call worlds into being, by using mere words to induce shared beliefs and actions. Historically, legal systems have wielded this power in notoriously violent and anti-Black ways. And yet, Black writers have long experimented with legal writing’s worldmaking potential as a possible site of freedom practice.

At her Wine Chat, Faith Barter will trace the surprising common ground between legal language and Black feminist fiction and poetry, examining its historical roots as well as its contemporary implications in texts like Ketanji Brown Jackson’s recent dissenting opinion in Trump v. CASA.

Barter is an associate professor of Black Studies and English at the University of Oregon. She is author of Black Pro Se: Authorship and the Limits of Law in Nineteenth-Century African American Literature (2025). Organized around four legal forms—appeal, confession, jurisdiction, and precedent—the book demonstrates how Black writers creatively used them to challenge the logics of their oppression. Reading Black writers not merely as witnesses or victims but as visionaries for what the legal system could be, the book excavates the importance of legal thinking in the African American literary tradition.

The UO Outdoor Programs Redefining Outdoorsy Program (RO) is designed to intentionally shift outdoor culture by highlighting and reducing barriers of entry to outdoor spaces, events, trips, and outings for those who identify in underrepresented groups in the outdoors and on campus. Our trips are designed to make an impact and support our community. At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. After it closes at the JSMA, the exhibition will travel to the USC Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California in Pasadena.

The Rubin recently transitioned to being a “museum without walls,” sharing its collection and expertise through traveling exhibitions, object loans, grant opportunities, and partnerships with the goal of encouraging understanding and appreciation of Himalayan art worldwide.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

As the AI task force for Organization Science, Murray and his coauthors explored the impact of artificial intelligence on both submissions and reviews at a major academic journal. To their knowledge, Organization Science is the first journal to report these early impacts of AI in the review process.

Submission volume has risen 42 percent since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, while writing quality has declined. The rise in AI-generated writing accounts for nearly all of these trends. AI-generated writing in reviews has also increased, and is characterized by lower writing quality and less topical diversity than human-generated writing.

At this early stage of AI adoption, the team cannot make a normative assessment about appropriate or ideal levels of AI usage. They can, however, conclude that the current state of AI tools, amplified by existing publish-or-perish incentives, appears to be pushing the system toward an equilibrium of more rather than better research. Reaching an equilibrium in which AI serves as a critical engine of innovation will require that institutions and the incentive structures they create adapt.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

After it closes at the JSMA, the exhibition will travel to the USC Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California in Pasadena.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

Work parties are when we come together to collectively care for the space. We have raised beds and other planting areas that are managed by the overall community to produce food (mainly vegetables) for the student food pantry, the SSC Produce Drop, and of course (and often primarily) those who come each week to volunteer. So, a typical work party may include harvesting food, weeding beds, sowing seeds/transplanting starts, chipping a wood path, etc. There is no signup ahead of time, the only prep beforehand is dressing for the weather in clothes you don't mind some dirt/sweat on.

The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Allan Wexler’s work mediates the gap between fine and applied art using the mediums of architecture, sculpture, photography, painting, and drawing. Wexler’s work is sometimes functional, sometimes theoretical, and often performative. In all cases, it demonstrates a commitment to reevaluating basic assumptions about the human relationship to the built and natural environments.

In the late 1960s Allan Wexler was an early member of the group of architects and artists who questioned the perceived divide between art and the design disciplines. They called themselves non-architects or paper architects. The subject of Wexler's work is the built environment. He creates drawings, multimedia objects, images, and installations that alter perceptions of domestic activities. Wexler is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (2016), is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and a winner of both a Chrysler Award for Design Innovation and the Henry J. Leir Prize from the Jewish Museum. Wexler currently teaches at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He is represented by the Jane Lombard Gallery in New York City where he had a solo exhibition from January through March of 2025.

Drawing inspiration from the dystopian and chilling worlds of cult classic horror and science-fiction films, duo Justin Pointer and Tony Kim have spent over a decade crafting a signature fusion of dark electronic music and metal-fueled synth anthems. Hailing from Irvine, California (USA), DANCE WITH THE DEAD continue to push the boundaries of retro-futuristic soundscapes and cinematic storytelling.

At the start of the exhibition, a multimedia map orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region, which encompasses Indian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings, Materials and Technologies, and Living Practices. Traditional scroll paintings (thangkas), sculptures in various media, and ritual items comprise the diverse range of objects on view.

Exhibition Thematic Sections

The Symbols and Meanings section juxtaposes paintings and sculptures to introduce the iconography of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; Tantric, female, and wrathful deities; Hindu gods and goddesses; and spiritually accomplished humans such as arhats, Mahasiddhas, and great religious teachers (lamas).

The Materials and Technologies section features in-depth displays detailing the making of a Tibetan thangka painting, the process of Nepalese lost-wax metal casting, the creation of clay, wood, and stone sculptures, and the fabrication of manuscripts and printed texts and images. It is augmented with artists’ tools and materials, and videos.

The section on Living Practices uses paintings, sculptures, ritual implements, and medical instruments to explore sacred rituals undertaken by Buddhists to accrue spiritual merit and achieve secular aims. It also introduces traditions of narrative and instructive Buddhist paintings and concludes with an elaborate wooden shrine housing sacred images, texts, and ritual objects to encourage visitors to consider the original context of the kinds of devotional art featured in the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition is organized and provided by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and curated by Senior Curator of Himalayan Art Elena Pakhoutova. Gateway to Himalayan Art is an integral component of the Rubin Museum’s Project Himalayan Art, a three-part initiative that also includes the publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects and a digital platform. Together they provide introductory resources for learning about and teaching Himalayan art.

In addition to introducing an astonishing array of beautiful and meaningful works of art, Gateway to Himalayan Art includes informative videos explaining a variety of religious, cultural, and artistic practices, audio recordings from Himalayan communities that highlight living traditions, and opportunities to dive deeper into the rich contextual material available on the Rubin’s integrated digital platform.

In conjunction with the JSMA’s presentation of Gateway to Himalayan Art, the Rubin is generously lending two additional global contemporary works by Shraddha Shrestha and Tsherin Sherpa that include elements from traditional Himalayan Buddhist art to welcome visitors in the museum lobby.

Gateway to Himalayan Art has already been shown at the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in 2023; the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, in 2024; and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 2025. After it closes at the JSMA, the exhibition will travel to the USC Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California in Pasadena.

The Rubin recently transitioned to being a “museum without walls,” sharing its collection and expertise through traveling exhibitions, object loans, grant opportunities, and partnerships with the goal of encouraging understanding and appreciation of Himalayan art worldwide.

This hands-on workshop introduces wet felting, guiding you as you transform soft wool fibers into a strong, cohesive piece of felt. Using merino wool, water, soap, heat, and pressure, you’ll layer, embellish, and shape fibers by hand while learning how the material changes at each stage. This workshop is free. Registration is required at myemu.uoregon.edu. You must have a UO ID or Community Card to register. Space is limited.

The popular Bike Month passport is back again, featuring updated “birds on bikes” artwork by local artist Erick Wonderly Varela. Starting April 30, you can grab a passport at the Kick-Off Party or participating bike shops including the EMU Bike Program. The exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals, laying the foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highlights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic ideals and literati culture, while also indicating Korea’s participation in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral order, governance, and cultural life of the period.

The modern and contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art, which has continually questioned, responded to, and been shaped by the last tumultuous century of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that portrays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged the canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures, genres, and mediums. The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into the international mainstream.

Navigating Through Centuries narrates the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture, individuals and communities, and socio-politics and history, inviting audiences to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The exhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art, as well as Heejung Chang, 2025–2026 JSMA/Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

Artist Jeremy Okai Davis illuminates their lives and asks us to consider how we remember our collective history. Davis's ten portraits of early Black residents of Oregon tell stories often left out of history, from a Civil War veteran to the editor of Oregon's largest Black newspaper.

OUT / LOUD is a safer space for those in the 2SLGBTQ+ community to come together in radical joy and solidarity. This event centers 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and offers a space where, for a moment, queer joy and radical community takes precedence over anything else. From its origins as a lesbian musical festival, OUT / LOUD has evolved to reflect various themes that seek to pay homage to Eugene's queer history, strengthen relationships within our present community, and empower future generations of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.

Our theme for this year's event is Power in Softness. This theme is rooted in the bridge between two extremes of existence. It embraces the newness in one’s own becoming while simultaneously reflecting a generational steadiness in queer history and legacy. Our lives are not tragedies. We come together to laugh, cheer, and LIVE in the vastness of who we are. We have been here, we are here, and we will continue to be here. This serene power recognizes 2SLGBTQ+ stories and lives – not inherently as a rebellion – but a withstanding chronicle of love.

This year's OUT / LOUD animal takes the form of a jellyfish. Water, the jellyfish's natural habitat, represents intuition, dreams, and visions. It represents the depths of the unconscious mind, cycles of unity with nature, and the flow of energy – movement of seasons and of life. Water teaches us that existence is cyclical. It shows us the limitlessness of all things. Surviving over 500 million years, Jellyfish are ancient. Despite their gelatinous demeanor, they are a symbolic creature that has thrived in adverse environments, willing to fight for as long as it takes to survive. They remind us to be whimsical, magnificent, and radically tenacious.
