This hands-on workshop introduces wet felting, guiding you as you transform soft wool fibers into a strong, cohesive piece of felt. Using merino wool, water, soap, heat, and pressure, you’ll layer, embellish, and shape fibers by hand while learning how the material changes at each stage. This workshop is free. Registration is required at myemu.uoregon.edu. You must have a UO ID or Community Card to register. Space is limited.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Audrey McCarthy revives abandoned studio materials through ornamentation and assemblage. Her ceramic sculptures explore process, preciousness, and play as the forms imbue remnants of unassuming studio corners: the bottom of the sink, the back of the shelf, the side of the bucket. She dresses each piece with color, texture, and pattern as an homage to the depreciated materials.

Andrew Hunter is exploring the objectness of a painting as a machine, as they yield the power to modify motion at an incredibly slow rate which captures the mechanics of (a) reality and (b)etween others. The paintings then become devices for communicating between the spaces of light and movement, the unseen segments of time which exposes the other.

Salomé Herrera, PhD, is a faculty member in the Department of English at the University of Oregon whose research is rooted in literary, performance, and Latinx studies. In their talk, "Trans* Epistemologies: Tracing the Womb across the Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa Papers," Herrera traces an embodied trans* epistemology across the Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa Papers from the Benson Library at the University of Texas at Austin. They specifically examine the development of Anzaldúa’s conceptualization of “el cenote,” Mexican lime hole sinkholes with spiritual significance for Mayan cultures, understood as material reservoirs or “wombs” of the collective unconscious from which creativity emerges. Drawing across spiritual and materialist traditions, Herrera shows how a sense of transitivity emerges from a queer Chicana feminist understanding of evolution, ultimately arguing that Anzaldúa’s speculative world-building transforms the womb from a colonized site of carceral policing into one of communal creativity with decolonial potential.

Alejandro Marín is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Romance Languages at the UO whose research focuses on contemporary migrant narratives from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Equatorial Guinea. His dissertation, "The New Errancy: Configurations of Contemporary Migrant Literature in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Equatorial Guinea," develops “The New Errancy” as an analytical category to examine how authors from three distinct migration contexts challenge traditional colonial axes, reimagine non-biological family formations, and construct transnational identities in solidarity with contemporary migrants. Supported by the CLLAS Graduate Research Grant, Marín conducted archival research in the Dominican Republic, interviewed author José Acosta, and observed cross-border dynamics at Dajabón, grounding his work in lived migration contexts. The chapter he presents reads Loida Maritza Pérez’s Geographies of Home as a meditation on how transnational Dominican families negotiate generational fracture, linguistic displacement, and the contested meaning of belonging between the island and the United States.

Moe Gámez is a doctoral student in the Department of English at the UO whose research explores the intersection of Latinx literature, environmental justice, and queer/trans theory. Their dissertation examines how queer and trans Latinx authors and artists represent ecologies through embodied, speculative, and political narratives. Through archival and literary analysis, Gámez’s work contributes to the growing subfield of queer and trans Latinx environmentalisms, highlighting how questions of environment, identity, and embodiment are deeply interconnected.

Together, these scholars offer interdisciplinary perspectives on how Latine communities and cultural producers negotiate identity, space, embodiment, and belonging in relation to migration, ecology, and social transformation. Please join us for this engaging conversation and opportunity to learn more about emerging faculty and graduate student research at the UO. Barandiarán is Associate Professor in Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and director of UCSB’s CREW Center for Restorative Environmental Work. She has published four books, including Science and Environment in Chile (MIT Press) and Demanding a Radical Constitution (Palgrave Macmillan). For her research on lithium mining, she won NSF research funding, a Berlin Prize from the American Academy in Berlin, and a fellowship at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center.

Consumers today are buying electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries motivated by the belief that they are doing good and decarbonizing society. But is sustainable lithium extraction possible? In Living Minerals, Javiera Barandiarán examines the history of lithium mining and uses during the 20th century, with a specific focus on the two oldest brine-lithium mines: Silver Peak, Nevada and Salar de Atacama, Chile, where lithium is found as one more element in a liquid mix of salts, minerals, and organisms.

For six decades, mining experts have failed to ask about water usage, about waste or brine leakage, and about the ecosystem impacts in delicate deserts. Instead, they have relied on various fictions about the size of reserves, the fate of leaked brine, or the value of waste in facilitating mine development. These fictions, rooted in brine-lithium’s material qualities, could be sustained thanks to powerful mining memories that celebrated resource nationalism. Unique in its historical and multi-dimensional approach to minerals and mining, based on the novel Rights of Nature paradigm, and the use of new archival materials from both Chile and the U.S., the book argues that decarbonizing society requires that we reckon with these realities—or risk deepening our dependency on an unsustainable mining industry.

We'll work in teams to write entries for Black Pioneers in the exhibit who do not have a Wikipedia entry, maybe edit those whose entries could be more accurate or robust, and make a page for the artist.

UO Libraries has partnered with the UO’s Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics to launch an annual lecture series in honor of University of Oregon alumnus and retired US Representative Peter DeFazio. The DeFazio Annual Lecture promotes public knowledge of politics, governance, civic engagement, and social history by spotlighting esteemed speakers with expertise in the policy areas that DeFazio advanced during his congressional career.

Join us for the second annual lecture delivered by Nicholas Kristof, a political commentator and proud Oregonian. A winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, he is a regular CNN contributor and an op-ed columnist for The New York Times. Born in Chicago, Kristof was raised in Yamhill, Oregon, the son of two professors at Portland State University. Kristof's lecture will address the current Wayne Morse Center theme of 'Common Ground: Cities and Towns Confronting Shared Challenges.'

In Dante’s Inferno, the author grapples with sin, its various manifestations, and its consequences. This time ultimately traces a trajectory of self-realization, acceptance, and accountability. Kitchen Dwellers embark on a similar odyssey over the course of their fourth full-length offering, Seven Devils. The Montana quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin], Torrin Daniels [Banjo], Joe Funk [Upright Bass], and Max Davies [Acoustic Guitar]—thread together an immersive and inimitable conceptual arc inspired by Dante’s Inferno and set to a soundtrack of folk-infused bluegrass spiked with psychedelic vision and rock energy.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

The committee will determine who will present based on the thoughtfulness and potential of each project submission.

One showcase project will be selected for an award and the award recipient will be announced during the reception portion of the event.

Steven Havens is a former senior executive at Bank of America, where he led multiple consumer and small business banking territories throughout South Florida and Southern California. After more than 16 years in banking, he made a career change, shifting to dual careers in education and catering.

He is the owner and head chef of his catering business specializing in boutique events, providing private chef services and cooking class instruction. His breadth of experience in corporate finance, sales leadership, and entrepreneurship gives him a wealth of knowledge that he enjoys sharing with aspiring students.

Havens earned his MBA in 2023 and teaches business finance, personal finance, and business ethics at the undergraduate level as an adjunct professor.

Artist Jeremy Okai Davis illuminates their lives and asks us to consider how we remember our collective history. Davis's ten portraits of early Black residents of Oregon tell stories often left out of history, from a Civil War veteran to the editor of Oregon's largest Black newspaper.

A practice interview helps you prepare for real-life interviews, which increases your chances of getting additional interviews and acquiring the job. It is also a great way to meet and network with professionals, which can lead to opportunities in the future. Anyone can participate in a practice interview and it’s fun to practice with people in different industries to see different styles of interviewing you might encounter in real life.

The UO Practice Interview Day is designed to help you acquire professional interview skills, get feedback from experienced professionals, and gain confidence. You will not be interviewing for a specific job at the company our volunteer works for. You will instead be practicing commonly asked interview questions and getting active feedback on your communication style, professionalism, and more.

Each practice interview will last ~30 minutes and you will get instant feedback from one of our professional interviewers.

Register in Handshake ahead of time to get tips and early access to the practice interview questions! Interviews are on a first-come, first-serve basis with multiple slots each half-hour. Set aside at least 30 minutes to participate. Drop-in and grab the next open time slot!

Nora Douglas Holt remade the world in her own image, radiating and relishing Black women’s ingenuity in all that she touched. Composer, philosopher, Jazz-Age icon, Harlem Renaissance muse, social activist, and pleasure seeker: Holt was all these things and more. In 1918, she became the first person of African descent in the United States to attain a master of music degree, and throughout the Roaring Twenties both personal scandals and professional triumphs kept her in the headlines. A contemporary of Florence Price and a friend of Josephine Baker, Holt was an omnipresent figure in both classical music and popular culture. In this talk, musicologist and pianist Samantha Ege traces the multifaceted musical socialite's tangled beginnings and illustrious career.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mary Wood is a semi-retired Professor of English at University of Oregon, where she has taught American Literature for over thirty years. She teaches a Jewish Writers course every year for UO undergraduates and regularly includes Jewish writers in her courses on 19th- and 20th-century American literature, American modernism, and memoir and autobiography. She has directed several dissertations and honors theses on 20th- and 21st-century Jewish American writers. She has published two scholarly books on memoir, fiction, and mental illness—The Writing on the Wall (University of Illinois Press, 1994) and Life Writing and Schizophrenia (Brill, 2013)—as well as several articles on American fiction writers, including Jewish American writers. She is currently working on a project that connects short stories by Jewish writer Grace Paley to writing by early 20th-century Jewish labor activists.

ABOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS

These courses are for people eager to engage in a studious seminar format. Each in-person only seminar meets weekly, over four sessions. The seminars are led by current and retired professors who provide formal study guides and lead college-level discussions, with participants actively contributing to each session. Seminars are noncredit and ungraded but include challenging homework.

Participation is open to all adults; no previous affiliation with UO is required. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) membership is not required, however, active OLLI members may register at a reduced fee.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Work parties are when we come together to collectively care for the space. We have raised beds and other planting areas that are managed by the overall community to produce food (mainly vegetables) for the student food pantry, the SSC Produce Drop, and of course (and often primarily) those who come each week to volunteer. So, a typical work party may include harvesting food, weeding beds, sowing seeds/transplanting starts, chipping a wood path, etc. There is no signup ahead of time, the only prep beforehand is dressing for the weather in clothes you don't mind some dirt/sweat on.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN Josey Scott is a 4 time Grammy nominated artist and original lead vocalist of the band Saliva. Spanning more than a decade, he has written and recorded 8 albums with Saliva and had 19 tracks released as singles. In 2002 he co-wrote and performed the hit “Hero” (which was used as one of the theme songs to the film Spider-Man) with Chad Kroeger of Nickelback. The video won “Best Video from a Film” at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

Josey has made cameo appearances with Jay Z on his track “Takeover” Little Wyte and Three Six Mafia. He has also appeared in several television and movie roles, including 2005’s “Hustle and Flow” with award winning actor Terrance Howard.

Scott is currently embarking on a solo career with a new band and a new brand. Working with famed producer Scattered Brains (Jelly Roll/Struggle Jennings) he is inventing a sound unique to his soul.

Bajaj is a landscape architecture graduate student from Northeast India hailing from the Brahmaputra Watershed, here in Oregon to learn from the Klamath movement. Their background as an architect and their field work on the Majuli island in India led to the simple but profound revelation of how architecture is a byproduct of the landscape when the communities are in close connection and relation with the lands and waters. Their work focuses on supporting cultural continuity through planning and design.

Self-defense isn’t just learning how to fight. It’s also learning how to set clear boundaries and stand up for yourself while maintaining healthy, positive relationships. In this supportive and empowering workshop, we will introduce you to a range of physical, verbal, and emotional skills that can help you recognize and thwart perpetrator tactics, reduce your risk of sexual assault, and feel more comfortable in your daily interactions. All techniques are simple, easy to learn, and effective regardless of fitness or experience level. The workshops is an introduction to the 10-week PE course, PEMA 116.

This workshop is open to all self-identified women and non-binary people who are comfortable in a space centered around experiences of those who identify as or may be perceived as women.

Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

This full-day event will bring together OAs from across the UO Eugene and the UO Portland campus for morning and afternoon sessions designed to foster a culture of community, and networking. Through various learning activities, participants will imagine and develop a culture that fosters community, gain a deeper understanding of trust, networking techniques, covering key elements such as growth, well-being, resilience, trust, belonging, connection, and purpose.

Attendees will hear from key leaders and engage in a hands-on activity facilitated by keynote speaker, Anthony Lambatos, Founder, MIBE Making It Better Every Day-Leadership Development and Owner, Footers Catering, and President of UO Alumni Association, who will provide inspiration and strategies for creating a culture we want to call our community.

The afternoon welcomes keynote speaker Jenna Schuttpelz, Senior Director for Talent Acquisitions and Class and Compensation, Human Resources. Jenna will share an activity and discussion around building your network, including the value of networking, practical tools and both individual and team habits that can strengthen your network and community.

Attendees will leave the symposium with an opportunity for participants to engage with one another, share ideas, and create a stronger, more connected community.

How it Works: This is a "Flipped" workshop designed for busy students and researchers.

Watch: You’ll receive short, targeted video lessons to watch on your own time

Work: We meet once a week for a 90-minute Live Challenge Lab. No lecturing! We spend the entire time live-coding, solving data challenges, and troubleshooting errors together.

By the end of four weeks, you will be able to:

Manage data projects reproducibly in RStudio.

Clean and "tidy" messy datasets using dplyr and tidyr.

Create publication-quality visualizations with ggplot2.

Automate your analysis with R Markdown.

Prerequisites and Setup:

No prior programming experience is required. Participants must have R and RStudio installed on their laptops prior to the first session. Instructions will be sent upon registration.

Commitment: By registering, you are committing to attending all four sessions and completing the weekly pre-work videos.

Co-director Alexi Pappas and Producer Laura Wagner will offer insight into the creative and logistical challenges of making an independent feature in Tracktown–Eugene, OR. An unconventional coming-of-age film that blurs the line between fiction and lived athletic experience, Tracktown (2016) draws on Pappas’s dual identity as an elite Olympic runner and filmmaker.

About the Filmmakers

Alexi Pappas–Co-director, Co-writer: Alexi is a filmmaker and a professional athlete training for the 2016 Olympics in the 10,000 meters. Alexi completed her thesis in poetry at Dartmouth College where she graduated magna cum laude before running off to compete in the 2012 Olympic Track & Field Trials. In 2011 Alexi co-wrote the script for the award-winning feature film Tall as the Baobab Tree. Alexi was also a member of the Dog Day Players improv theatre troupe at Dartmouth and is a graduate of the UCB Theater improv program in New York City. She is the co-founder of Film Fatales Portland.

Laura Wagner–Producer: Laura, founder of Bay Bridge Productions, produces independent films and theatre projects. She is the recipient of the Sundance Institute’s Creative Producing Fellowship, the San Francisco Film Society’s Kenneth Rainin Foundation Fellowship, and the IFP/Cannes Marche Du Film Producer’s Network Fellowship. She was nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award for It Felt Like Love, the critically acclaimed feature film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Join Salar Mameni for a reflection on war, genocide and the limits of critique.

Salar Mameni is an associate professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies and affiliated faculty in the History of Art at the University of California at Berkeley. He specializes in contemporary transnational art and visual culture in the Arab/Muslim world with interdisciplinary research on racial discourse, transnational gender politics, militarism, oil cultures and extractive economies in West Asia. Mameni is the author of Terracene: A Crude Aesthetics (Duke, 2023), which considers the emergence of the Anthropocene as a new geological era in relation to the concurrent declaration of the War on Terror in the early 2000s.

Join UO Libraries for a practical, beginner-friendly workshop covering everything you need to know to set up and enjoy a quality analog listening experience. We'll walk through the anatomy of a turntable and stereo system, discuss how to choose and position equipment, and cover the basics of proper record care and playback. We'll also go hands-on with basic repair techniques for speakers and turntables, so when something goes wrong, you'll know where to start. Whether you're dusting off an old family record player or thinking about getting into vinyl for the first time, this workshop will give you the confidence to get it sounding its best.

Each workshop also has an associated next-day drop-in assistance hour. This workshop series is meant to take participants with little to no experience in community project planning and development and help them complete their first project proposal. While we are focused on assisting with project planning and development of Alaskan Native/Native American Language projects, much of the content that you will be learning in these workshops is readily transferrable to other types of projects.

Registrants will have access to all workshops in this April offering. Attendance at all workshops in the offering is recommended but not required.

All instruction is provided online and instructors will join online. Participants will join remotely via zoom (please see technology section below.)

Over the last three decades, domestic amenity or lifestyle migration across the United States has accelerated processes of rural gentrification, shifting landscapes of production to landscapes of consumption--from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to Highlands, North Carolina. This talk explores how employers recruit low-wage, mostly undocumented Latine immigrants to work in gentrifying rural communities historically “off the map” of immigrant settlement, drawing on qualitative fieldwork in Colorado and Georgia. I trace how, over time, employers transformed their business model to reach new levels of profitability predicated on access to racially marked, “illegal” workers even as public, commodified images of these places celebrated them as sites of luxury, recreation, and whiteness. I contribute to debates about rural gentrification, geographies of immigrant settlement, and to the ways scholars theorize immigrant networks, illegality, and labor in the contemporary United States.

Lise Nelson is Professor in the School of Geography, Development and Environment at the University of Arizona. She is author of Illegality and the Production of Affluence: Undocumented Labor and Gentrification in Rural America (2025—University of California Press). She was a member of the geography faculty at the University of Oregon between 2001-2013.

This talk explores Alice Bucknell’s work through the lens of clipping: the moment in a video game when the player slips through a wall or falls beyond the map. Often treated as a technical error, clipping becomes a method for breaking open systems and exposing their ecological, political, and epistemic structures. Across projects such as The Alluvials (2023), Small Void (2025), and Earth Engine (both 2026), Bucknell uses gamespace as a site for speculative experimentation, blurring boundaries between humans and nonhuman, natural and synthetic intelligences, and self vs world. In this framework, play offers an affective encounter with the world that’s grounded in total feeling rather than totalized knowledge. Clipping the horizon means colliding with the limits of perception itself and tumbling sideways into a world that resists being mapped, modeled, or controlled.

Alice Bucknell is an artist, writer, and educator based in Los Angeles. Their work explores the affective dimensions of video games as interfaces for understanding complex systems, relationships, and forms of knowledge. Bucknell is generally interested in the limits of scientific knowledge and systems thinking, the weird possibilities of play, and play as an embodied technology. They have exhibited internationally, including at Centre Pompidou (Paris), Kunsthalle Praha (Prague), Ars Electronica (Linz), transmediale (Berlin), Arcade Seoul, the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Singapore Art Museum and Serpentine Galleries (London). In 2025, their video game The Alluvials was acquired by SFMOMA, becoming the first video game in the museum's permanent collection. Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

This talk examines the recent trend of “whisperpop,” as performed by female-coded voices. In whisperpop, a sense of intimacy, vulnerability, and youth is imbued through a hushed vocal timbre. Rather than mistake vocal vulnerability for incompetence, I argue that there is a paradoxical relationship between the vocal virtuosity required to perform in such a manner and the perception of that tone. After discussing the physiology of the sound, I analyze its use by prominent artists (e.g. Gracie Abrams, Phoebe Bridgers, and Billie Eilish), and conclude with thoughts on the performance of youth and gender in post-millennial popular music.

Alyssa Barna is a music theorist interested in the analysis of form, timbre, and the voice in recent popular music. As a public music theorist, she aims to share theory and analysis with broader audiences and her current work in pedagogy focuses on connecting theory with technology, media, and culture. Alyssa is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, where she has taught since 2019.

This hands-on workshop introduces wet felting, guiding you as you transform soft wool fibers into a strong, cohesive piece of felt. Using merino wool, water, soap, heat, and pressure, you’ll layer, embellish, and shape fibers by hand while learning how the material changes at each stage. This workshop is free. Utilizing the visual language of color calibration charts and contemporary stock photography, this image collage offers the viewer an amalgamation of references that could at first appear to be celebratory. Mashed together are depictions of beauty regiments, skin tone makeup charts, piles of foods and ethnic spices, sumptuous desserts, tropical vacation landscapes, pastoral farmlands, and community building moments of togetherness. On closer inspection, the frictions and ironies begin to surface, suggesting an anxious shift in contemporary politics masked by upbeat advertising language and colorful veneer.

Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mary Wood is a semi-retired Professor of English at University of Oregon, where she has taught American Literature for over thirty years. She teaches a Jewish Writers course every year for UO undergraduates and regularly includes Jewish writers in her courses on 19th- and 20th-century American literature, American modernism, and memoir and autobiography. She has directed several dissertations and honors theses on 20th- and 21st-century Jewish American writers. She has published two scholarly books on memoir, fiction, and mental illness—The Writing on the Wall (University of Illinois Press, 1994) and Life Writing and Schizophrenia (Brill, 2013)—as well as several articles on American fiction writers, including Jewish American writers. She is currently working on a project that connects short stories by Jewish writer Grace Paley to writing by early 20th-century Jewish labor activists.

ABOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS

These courses are for people eager to engage in a studious seminar format. Each in-person only seminar meets weekly, over four sessions. The seminars are led by current and retired professors who provide formal study guides and lead college-level discussions, with participants actively contributing to each session. Seminars are noncredit and ungraded but include challenging homework.

Participation is open to all adults; no previous affiliation with UO is required. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) membership is not required, however, active OLLI members may register at a reduced fee.

45 RPM was founded in 2009 by Sara Billdt and since then, the band has featured some of Eugene’s best players. Though the line up has changed through the years, the band has continuously offered up Funk and Soul favorites from the ‘60s and ‘70s. In 2017 the B3 girls came together to tie in a classic girl group look and feel. The current line up has been alchemized with several years together, and the stage chemistry shows it. Their mission is to keep the love for these classic songs burning, and keep the dance floor movin’!

Work parties are when we come together to collectively care for the space. We have raised beds and other planting areas that are managed by the overall community to produce food (mainly vegetables) for the student food pantry, the SSC Produce Drop, and of course (and often primarily) those who come each week to volunteer. So, a typical work party may include harvesting food, weeding beds, sowing seeds/transplanting starts, chipping a wood path, etc. There is no signup ahead of time, the only prep beforehand is dressing for the weather in clothes you don't mind some dirt/sweat on.

On Monday, April 27, leaders from Burson — one of the world’s largest communications firms and a global authority on reputation, led by University of Oregon graduate and CEO Corey duBrowa — will join SOJC students for a conversation about one of the most valuable assets organizations have today: reputation.

New research from Burson estimates the global “Reputation Economy” at $7.07 trillion, showing that companies with strong reputations generate measurable financial value and outperform their peers.

So what exactly is reputation?

How do organizations measure, monitor, protect, and promote it?

And what role do public relations professionals play in managing reputation in an AI-driven world?

Burson — which worked with Nike and the University of Oregon on the recent Grateful Ducks collection — will bring the perspective of a firm that helps some of the world’s most influential organizations build and protect reputation.

Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

Suicide by proxy was a novel crime that emerged in late sixteenth-century Germany: suicidal people committed capital crimes with the explicit goal of “earning” their executions, as a short-cut to their salvation. By dying repentantly at the hands of the state, perpetrators hoped to escape eternal damnation that befell direct suicides. To that end they typically murdered a young child, as a religious sacrifice. Suicide by proxy had a cross-confessional appeal and was astonishingly frequent, leading to high numbers of executions in numerous Central European territories. Kathy Stuart embeds this shocking practice in its religious and political context to show how it emerged as the psychological consequence of social disciplining techniques deployed by the early modern state.

Stuart is Professor of History at the University of California, Davis. She researches the history of criminal justice, marginality and gender in early modern Germany. Her first book, Defiled Trades and Social Outcasts: Honor and Ritual Pollution in Early Modern Germany (Cambridge UP, 2000), received the biennial Hans Rosenberg Book Prize. Her second book, Suicide by Proxy in Early Modern Germany: Crime, Sin and Salvation (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) was awarded the Natalie Zemon Davis Book Prize in 2024. She collaborated with Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala on their feature film Des Teufel’s Bad (The Devil’s Bath), awarded a Silver Bear at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival. The film’s female protagonist is a composite of two historical women child murderers featured in Suicide by Proxy.

How it Works: This is a "Flipped" workshop designed for busy students and researchers.

Watch: You’ll receive short, targeted video lessons to watch on your own time

Work: We meet once a week for a 90-minute Live Challenge Lab. No lecturing! We spend the entire time live-coding, solving data challenges, and troubleshooting errors together.

By the end of four weeks, you will be able to:

Manage data projects reproducibly in RStudio.

Clean and "tidy" messy datasets using dplyr and tidyr.

Create publication-quality visualizations with ggplot2.

Automate your analysis with R Markdown.

Prerequisites and Setup:

No prior programming experience is required. Participants must have R and RStudio installed on their laptops prior to the first session. Instructions will be sent upon registration.

This talk will explore the intersection of politics, religion, and art in Tibetan Buddhism. At the heart of this dynamic is the force of religion to claim political power, both symbolically as a path to legitimation in the form of sacral kingship, and literally as a tantric ritual technology to physical power in the form of magic. The use of reincarnation as a means of succession was a unique model of political legitimacy employed by courts in Tibet and brought to empires to the east. Images were one of the primary means of political propagation, integral to magical tantric rites, and embodiments of power. Through the lens of Tibetan Buddhism’s significant and sustained political role this discussion will place Himalayan art in a larger global context and highlight an aspect of the tradition that is critical to understanding its importance on the world stage but may run counter to popular perceptions.

Karl Debreczeny is Senior Curator, Collections and Research, at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art. He holds masters degrees in art history and Tibetan studies from Indiana University and a PhD in art history from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on exchanges between Tibetan and Chinese artistic traditions. He has curated exhibitions including Faith and Empire: Art and Politics in Tibetan Buddhism (2019) and Masterworks: A Journey through Himalayan Art (2016–2024) and co-curated many others including Lama, Patron, and Artist: The Great Situ Panchen (Smithsonian NMAA, 2010); Remember That You Will Die (2010); Gateway to Himalayan Art (2009–2015); and Wutaishan: Pilgrimage to Five Peak Mountain (2007). His current ongoing project is content co-lead on the educational initiative Project Himalayan Art (launched 2023).

Synopsis: Upper Austria in the year 1750: a fishpond reflects the grey sky. A deep, dark forest swallows the sunlight. On a hilltop, an executed woman has been displayed for all to see. As evidence. As a warning. As an omen? Agnes, deeply religious and highly sensitive, looks at the dead woman with pity. But also with longing, because she feels like a stranger in the world of her husband Wolf. It is an emotionally cold world consisting of work, chores and expectations. Agnes withdraws more and more into herself. Her inner prison becomes ever more oppressive, her melancholy more overwhelming. Soon her only way out seems to be a shocking act of violence. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala have created a profound and disturbing psychogramm of a woman, played with flesh and bone, sinew and soul by Anja Plaschg, who also composed the music as Soap&Skin. The Devil’s Bath gives a voice to the invisible and unheard women of the rural past; it portrays the harshness of their daily lives defined by religious dogma and taboos which still resonate down the ages. Long interested in how visual displays can camouflage more complex realities, Syjuco purchased the majority of these images from commercial stock photography sites, juxtaposing them in a way that teases out conflicting meanings. Included is one large image she staged in her studio, as well as multiple color calibration charts that are meant to check for “correct color” — a fraught metaphor for our times.

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Museum, SFMOMA, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. She is a Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley and lives in Oakland, California.

This four-hour public relations workshop explores how short-form video is used strategically in modern communications. Participants will learn how communication professionals plan, structure, and produce short videos that support campaigns, explain complex topics, and help organizations connect with audiences. Workshop: Video Storytelling and Client Workflow: From Discovery to a Social Media Short

This intensive four-hour workshop will introduce students to professional video storytelling within strategic communications and public relations. Led by two senior communication professionals, this workshop combines strategic instruction with hands-on production.

Participants will learn how short-form video is conceptualized, structured, produced, and delivered in real client environments, including nonprofit organizations, public agencies, higher education, and private-sector clients. This workshop will reflect current industry standards and mirrors real client workflow from discovery meeting through final export. Students will gain an understanding of why video matters strategically to a business and its brand, and leave with a short social media video built during the session.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Our 2026 Science Knight Out lecture, "A Decade of Building Oregon's Future," celebrates a decade of progress at the Knight Campus. Hear from bioengineering faculty--including 3D printing pioneer Paul Dalton and electrical engineer Keat Ghee Ong -- and students who are turning cutting-edge research into life-changing products. Knight Campus Executive Director Bob Guldberg will highlight the ways Knight Campus innovators are growing Oregon's biotech economy through the creation of startup companies like Penderia and VivoTex, and training tomorrow's STEM workforce. Take Back the Night seeks to raise awareness about the realities of sexual and domestic violence on campus and in the community and calls on us to take action. This event is for survivors and those who want to support and bear witness in solidarity.

Our theme for this year’s event is Collective Power, a reflection of a strength that shines when people come together. Survivors, allies, advocates, and entire communities uniting to challenge systems of violence, support healing, and demand justice. This theme rejects isolation and emphasizes that no one has to resist or recover alone. Building on last year’s theme, Rest is Resistance, the Women’s Center continues to honor every stage of the journey, and when you are ready to rise, we rise with you."

The concert opens with Haydn himself, followed by his most famous pupil a young Beethoven, still firmly rooted in the Classical tradition of his Second Symphony before the revolutionary works that would follow. Gautier Capuçon joins the orchestra for Tchaikovsky's elegant Rococo Variations, a 19th-century composer's affectionate nod to Mozart's world, and Stravinsky's Pulcinella rounds out the evening by reaching even further back, reinventing Baroque material through a thoroughly modern lens. Kirill Petrenko conducts. No prior classical music experience needed just curiosity about how the past echoes through great music.
