Tickets are available at the door or in advance from the UO Ticket Office, 541-346-4363. The celebrated classical pianist will perform in the historic Beall Concert Hall on the UO campus. Repertoire will include Mozart’s Variations in D Major on a Minuet, selections from Debussy’s Préludes, Book II, Schubert’s Sonata in B-Flat major, and Enrique Granados’ Allegro de Concierto. Winner of the first prize in the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall, Nel enjoys a remarkable and multifaceted career that has taken him to North and South America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa. Following an auspicious debut at the age of twelve, the Johannesburg native captured first prizes in all the major South African competitions while still in his teens. With an active repertoire of more than 100 works for piano and orchestra, highlights of Nel’s nearly four decades of concertizing include performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, the symphonies of Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit, and London, among many others. His recordings include four solo albums, several chamber music recordings, and works for piano and orchestra by Franck, Faure, and Saint-Saens. Nel is professor of piano and chamber music at the Butler School of Music of the University of Texas at Austin.
