A word from your Academic Adviser Fellow

Meet Kris Katkus!

Ok, but what is an Adviser Fellow?

The primary responsibility of the Advising Fellow is to support the academic transition of residents living in the University Housing system and promote their ongoing academic success. In addition to providing regular evening advising hours for the residential system at large, the Advising Fellow position will collaborate with professional staff members to develop and implement targeted advising, programming, and outreach based on needs and opportunities present within specific halls (e.g. major exploration, schedule planning, navigation of academic warning/probation, general education requirements, reviewing degree audits). The role of the Advising Fellow aims to support the development of students’ decision-making skills and intellectual growth, while promoting an academic culture that enhances self-efficacy and contributes to the achievement of students’ personal and educational goals.

Sounds cool. So tell me more about this Kris person.

Hometown – Chugiak, Alaska
Alma Mater – University of Oregon
Major – Linguistics and Ethnic Studies
Fun Fact – My favorite movie is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze.

What do you do when you're free?

I just recently got into geocaching. It’s like treasure hunting in real life, and it’s a great way to get out and see Oregon!

What’s your go-to piece of advice for students who come to see you?

Learning isn’t restricted to the classroom – opportunities to expand our understanding can be found anywhere when we seek them out. We grow most as we step outside our comfort zones – be intentional in seeking opportunities to push yourself!

Any tips for first year students?

Step outside of your comfort zone-- I didn't even know my dream major existed until I started exploring my gen eds!

What about tips for returning students?

Your degree is more than just the classes you take -  complement what you're learning in class, gain experience, and build skills through work, internships, and community involvement!

Last words?

I'm also pumped to meet all the Walton-folk! Feel free to swing by if you're planning your schedule, you're exploring majors, or if you have concerns about your GPA.

Kris will be available on Thursdays, 6 p.m - 8 p.m in Hawthorne 103 starting Week 2 for both Walton North and South for drop in counseling. You may also make an appointment at oaa.uoregon.edu.

Bring your own mug when you come by for a delcious warm beverage!
